Disability & Inclusion
Multiclass is a format used to create meaningful competition for athletes with a disability. Multiclass events are held across athletics, cross country, swimming and tri/aquathlon.
To compete in multiclass events, a current, eligible classification of either provisional, national, international or review status is required.Â
How are multiclass results/ placings determined?
Multi-class events provide students with disability the opportunity to compete together in the same event. Results are determined using a sport-specific scoring system, which compares each athlete’s performance against a benchmark or standard for their impairment classification.
As a result, the winner of a multi-class event is not necessarily the athlete who throws the furthest, crosses the finish line first, or touches the wall before other competitors.Â
Instead, the winner is the athlete whose performance achieves the highest score relative to the benchmark for their classification. Multi-class events are offered at School Sport WA Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming Championships, with each sport using its own approved scoring methodology to determine placings.
In athletics, multi-class results are determined using Baseline Performance.
In this system, an athlete’s time or distance is compared to the world record (or similar) for their specific disability and event, to create a percentage.
Results and overall placings are determined by using the percentages achieved. The
competitor with the greatest percentage wins.

Secondary multi-class implement weights – Field Events
In cross country, multi-class results are determined using Baseline Performance.
In this system, an athlete’s time or distance is compared to the MDS time for their
specific disability and event, to create a percentage.
The MDS times have been created using averaged results and records from; Paralympic
and World Championships, plus U/16, U/18 and U/20 Australian events.
Results and overall placings are determined by using the percentages achieved. The
competitor with the greatest percentage wins.
In Swimming, multi-class results are determined using the Multi-Class Point Score
(MCPS).
In this system, an athlete’s time is compared to the world record (or similar) for their
specific disability and event, to create a score.
Results and overall placings are determined by using the scores achieved. The
competitor with the greatest score wins.

Triathlon and Aquathlon are part of our para pathway in school sport for students with disability. Students who wish to participate in multiclass events at our Triathlon/ Aquathlon event require classification.
