FAQ
Do schools need to buy their own boats?
No. The boats are provided by the sailing clubs where training and the championships take place. A training fee, a regatta entry fee and a refundable damage waiver is paid to the host sailing club.
Does a teacher need to be a sailor to manage a competitive school team?
No. Sailing training and teams racing coaching will be provided by the host sailing club. A teacher should be involved in promoting, building and managing the team in the same way they would do for any other school sporting team. Parents will also take an active role in supporting the team.
What is the format of school teams sailing?
Teams train one or two afternoons per week as part of the their school sport. The WA championships are held in a carnival-format over two or three days (depending on the number of teams entered) with qualifying rounds followed by a finals series. All schools generally erect a marque at the host sailing club during the championship and parents provide food/drink for the sailors. A carnival atmosphere is generated where girls and boys mix with each other in friendly and respectful competition both on and off the water.
Who can join a team?
A school team requires a minimum of 6 sailors per team. The team can be made up of boys and girls from years 7 through 12. Schools may enter multiple teams into the championship. Each team will have three boats with two sailors per boat (skipper and crew) in each race.
How does the championship schedule work?
All schools entered in the championship (girls, boys, mixed) will sail against each other multiple times throughout the qualifying rounds. The championship uses a Swiss League format, which resolves the qualifying race schedule to pitch teams at around the same level against each other is races.
