Fremantle Dockers Supporting WA Schools
The Fremantle Dockers launched their
Community Development Program for 2011 this week to coincide with the beginning
of the new school term.
Fremantle’s CDP was first introduced
way back in 2003, the first integrated program of its kind in the AFL. Through
its first seven years the program’s initiatives have engaged more than 700,000
children.
With childhood obesity continuing to
be a major heath issue, the program is dedicated to promoting health and fitness
in children through increased physical activity.
In 2011 the Fremantle Football Club in
conjunction with the WA Football Commission have again joined forces to promote
these ever popular schools program to thousands of young West Australian primary
and secondary students.
The Fremantle Dockers Football Club’s
Skills 4 Schools Program is an integrated range of programs and activities
reflecting the club’s ongoing commitment to the West Australian community.
Freo Skills 4 Schools allows students the
opportunity to participate in a range of fun physical activities, including Freo
Fast Ball, Freo Kwik Kick and Freo Long Bomb.
Launched in 2010, the Freo Dockers Cup
has proved to be an extremely popular interschool football competition for
primary aged Year 6/7 female students. The Freo Dockers Cup is played either in
a one day Lightning Carnival format or a weekly round robin competition.
2011 will also see primary schools
participate in the Freo Dockers Shield – an interschool one-day lightning
carnival program organised by either the schools in their District or conducted
by their local WAFL Club.
For secondary school students Freo
House Footy has been an instant hit. Freo House Footy is a modified game that
has strong parallels with the traditional game of Australian Football.
Designed so that everyone can play, it
is less physically demanding, has minimal time commitment with a major emphasis
on fun and safety (non contact).
The game enables students of all ages
and ability levels to participate in male, female or mixed competitions that can
be played during any school Term or incorporated as part of the AFL SEPEP
program.
